Sea Glass

I'm so excited! I was up at Lake Erie last week and I walked to another part of the beach that gets more boat traffic. I found so much brown beach glass it wasn't funny! I went looking for it on 3 different occasions! I also found 2 pieces of green, one piece of clear and one piece of white. I had no idea that all I had to do was go to the other beaches to find some!

Hello! I just wanted to say hi. I grew up land-locked in Ohio and I still am, so I never went sea glass hunting growing up. I heard about it on a Martha Stewart Living show back in 2001. When I went to New England in 2003, I made sure to look for sea glass and I found one little piece of brown glass. I've never found any sea glass on the beaches of Kelleys Island (up in Lake Erie), where I go every summer.

I LOVE that book, "Pure Sea Glass"! The pictures are gorgeous!

I use a rock tumbler to make "faux sea glass" (I don't try to pass it off as the real thing). So far, I've just separated it into Ziplock bags with a note about what it's from. Whenever I break a glass, I keep it to tumble. I also use wine bottles and other pieces of glass. I just started looking at garage sales for cheap glassware. I found two small lavender plates and and orangeish/yellow dish--all for 30c!!

Someday, I plan to put them into stone garden steps in a mosic pattern.

We had a whole ordeal today going to find sea glass.

I was bored so I suggested to mom that we go to the beach to look for sea glass. So we go over there and start walking to the water when I say "hey look a dead fish". There was a little silver fish dead on the beach. Usually we don't see anything like that there which is why I pointed it out. As we got closer to the water however we saw that the beach was covered in these dead fish. I *think* they might be alewives but I can't be sure. There were hundreds if not 1000+ of these fish all over the beach, and from the condition they were in I'd say they recently showed up on the beach. We actually did see 1, 1 out of all of them, that was still flopping around so Mom picked him up and tossed him back into the water (I think its likely he just washed back up anyway though - but we tried). So we're looking at all these fish and kind of still looking for sea glass as we walk up the beach I turn and I see this horrible sight. At first I thought it was some horrible toy, but then I realized it was too grotesque to be anything fake and I screamed. It was indeed a large dead turtle. It was dead long enough that it was getting all bloated. It was so gross. I didn't even know there were turtles in Lake Michigan let alone something that big... and dead. It was big and had like spikey things on its tail, it almost looked like a dinosaur or something.

I did however find just a couple of nice pieces of sea glass.

Here are some pictures of some of the sea glass I've picked up. These first three are from the end of the summer last year. And the second three are from earlier this year.

I just found this community. Sea Glass is my favorite jewelry. I have a number of pieces. Mostly jewelry, necklaces, earrings etc... I don't have a lot of opportunities to get to the beach. So I buy my Sea Glass. I am a purist and will only buy genuine Sea Glass.

I love the history behind the Sea Glass and it's so unique.

Here's some of the books I have.
